NXT Nutrition Physique Competitor and athlete Kellyanne Byrne gives a detailed overview of the science surrounding CBD Oil for athletes and bodybuilders alike.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the 104 chemical components known as cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa plant.

The main and most commonly known chemical component found in the plant is Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC which is psychoactive and causes the ‘high’ commonly associated with Cannabis.

CBD oil is not psychoactive and unlike THC, CBD has been known for its wide range of health benefits and makes it a safe and effective option for patients who may be concerned about the mind-altering effects of other cannabinoids such as THC.

How can CBD help improve your health?

Scientists have discovered that CBD oil is responsible for the pain-relieving effects associated with the Cannabis plant.

The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response.

Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting ECS activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters.

The list of health concerns treatable by CBD and health benefits it provides is so long because these receptors are integral to so many bodily systems because they are found not just in the brain but also in many organs as well as connective tissue, skin, glands, and immune cells.

Pain Relief

One of the most celebrated health benefits of CBD oil is its analgesic (pain relieving) effects. It’s thought that CBD interacts with receptors in the brain and immune system to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Cannabinoids affect the transmission of pain signals from the affected region to the brain (ascending) and from the brain to the affected region (descending).

CBD is used in the treatment of pain in many different forms, including chronic and difficult-to-treat pain that’s associated with headaches, migraine, arthritis, cancer and multiple sclerosis.

Combat Anxiety

While CBD is most commonly used to treat physiological symptoms, there’s a growing body of research that indicates it can also be used in the therapy of a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety.

In one study, 24 people with social anxiety disorder received either 600 mg of CBD or a placebo before a public speaking test.

The group that received the CBD had significantly less anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, compared to the placebo group (12).

For Epilepsy

One of the most promising uses for CBD is as a treatment for epilepsy. Scientists have recognized for many years the anti-seizure capabilities of CBD, recently THC has been shown effective in people whose epileptic seizures are resistant to other treatments.

Seizures occur when there’s a dramatic fluctuation of electrical activity in the brain. Over the years, a number of high-profile cases have raised awareness of CBD’s anti-seizure properties.

CBD has also been researched for its potential effectiveness in treating several other neurological diseases.

For Sleep

As CBD has the ability to reduce sleep difficulties and improve sleep quality, according to research, CBD has been shown to reduce insomnia in people who suffer from chronic pain, anxiety and many other conditions.

CBD has endless health benefits and as our bodies naturally produce their own cannabinoids the supplemented CBD oil is the ultimate natural supplement encouraging faster results when used regularly.
